Dress Up Dress Down
DRESS UP DRESS DOWN is mostly inspired by the work of Andy Warhol and specifically by the famous series of portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn was an icon for Warhol and for a lot of people. The memorable moment of her dress blown by the steam that is escaping from the manholes is part of the cultural heritage of the city of New York.
The volume is designed as a block of ice transformed under the effect of steam. Two masses compose the project. Each of them is built around a huge courtyard, a vacuum created by the exhalation, just like the dress of Marilyn. Steam goes through, escaping from the ground and ascending to the sky.
Consideration for the neighborhood also shaped the two volumes. The urban fabric of the Lower East Side was preserved, by dividing the project in two. The objective was to built as high as possible, without blocking access to the sun and the view of the sky from the other buildings.

Plans
The first volume hosts the Andy Warhol Museum. At the corner of Essex and Delancey streets, there is a large public square connected to the existing subway, the Low Line, the museum and the market. The museum stands next to it and a dress made of glass blossoms above the place. This aperture leads the eye to the sky and gives a monumental effect to the museum’s main entrance. More than the signal of a building, it is also the central and emblematic point of the Lower East Side and one of its most famous artists, Andy Warhol.
In the second volume, the apartments and the market are wrapped around another dress, reversed. Its shape creates a courtyard for people living there, like an oasis contrasting from the city’s pollution and noise. The angles of the facades are designed to optimize sun gains for each type of apartment and to provide light to the courtyard, down to the market.
